Finding Gold in the Mountain of 5 Letter Domains

By - July 13, 2009 - 0 Comments
The most valuable things in the world are either in high demand, rare in scarcity, or valuable because of the effort needed to obtain.  5Ls fit into the last category because there is so much junk out there.  With almost 12 million possible name combinations to choose from, there are so many names out there for people to hand register that the truly good ones are often hard to find because of all the HGRZL.coms that hit the market. I live by a simple rule, if you can hand register it now, it is worth reg fee.  There are a few exceptions out there, new technology and events. These come up every day... Read More »

Setting Up Micro Sites for Mobile Devices

By - July 10, 2009 - 0 Comments
Mini sites are the latest craze. The "I'm not going to make a real site but good enough that you can't tell it's really a parking page" type site that we are all building,  is becoming commonplace on the net.  I think it is a big move towards ridding the world of parking pages which all non domainer surfers despise. I don't have to tell you that the web is becoming more mobile every day and that soon everyone will be on the web at least once a day on their phone or portable device. With that knowledge I'm surprised that none of the mini-sites I visit adjust to the mobile user.  Many of the sites have... Read More »

Bido Has Evolved….and I Like It

By - July 8, 2009 - 1 Comment
I was curious to see how Bido was going to stay afloat in the love me know, forget about me later internet world.  Today I think I learned the answer.  I have always loved the concept but didn't really like the domains coming through.  Looking back, I don't think there were really that many bad names, it was just the fact that they only had five auctions a week, only at lunch, so the wasn't much action or things to look and discuss.  That is about to change.  Here's what Sahar Sarid had to say on his blog The Conceptualist 1. Nothing is perfect. There may be some hiccups, we’re already aware o... Read More »

Isn’t .cm the Worst Case of Cybersquatting in The Industry

By - July 7, 2009 - 4 Comments
Rick Latona is a man I truly respect.  One,  for being light years ahead in his thinking of monetizing domains and two,  for having the confidence to be a more high risk, high reward than his peers. He, like others preach the generic domain because it is GENERIC. Nobody owns the rights to generics and therefore are kings of the dot com world.  People take these generics and build a brand based on these names and on some occassions , actually take a generic name, add a dot com to the end, and now they have a brand.  Take buy.com.  Buy is a big generic but we all know Buy.com.  Now bring in the lee... Was DomainPantry Too Close to DNKitchen?

By - July 6, 2009 - 1 Comment
The 35 people that have come to the site saw that I started my new domain blog as DomainPantry.com.  A name I picked up on a drop and a name that I thought was great.  A closet full of domain names, stored away gaining value.  Just like my old Star Wars toys (they really never became too valueable). One problem, 20 minutes into my official announcement Patrick, of ChefPatrick.com, thought the name was a little too close to his DNKitchen name.  Now I like and respect Patrick. He has a nice blog and we have done business together but I didn't change it because he asked.  I changed it because he go... Read More »

The Only Way to Cash Out is To Sell Out: The DnGator Story

By - July 5, 2009 - 0 Comments
I'm getting a kick out of the opinions and stories floating around the domain world about the recent sellout of DnGator to Domaining.com. The first thing that comes to my mind is congrats to Theo.  He doesn't know me but I still am happy for him.  As a former sell out blogger and sellout website owner,  I know the value of cashing in for all your hard work.  I sold my blog to Break and was part owner of a website that was sold to CBS for over $4 million.  The results of those two sales a few years later?  I have a ton more money in my pocket and those sites have either gone dark or are no longer t... Love Em or Hate Em Sedo Still Rules

By - July 5, 2009 - 0 Comments
It's certainly a love hate relationship for me as well.  Sedo is simply one of the few auction houses that regularly can get you top dollar for your domain name.  Others have tried but none have come close to matching what they offer.  Sure many of the auctions never get paid and when you buy,  they never transfer the domain,  but for the most time the auction goes well.  It takes forrrrrreeevvvver but it does happen.  I like Bido.com and have auctioned a few domains over there as well but there is an incredible amount of poor names for an auction house that presently has only one name per day. ... Coneflower dot com

By - July 4, 2009 - 0 Comments
Coneflower.com was one of the first domains I purchased when I first got into garden related domains.  As a nursery owner and a plant lover it is my favorite flower and a name I really wanted.  I contacted the owner and told him what I was willing to pay.  He replied back with a number 10 times the amount.  I let him know if he ever needed cash I would buy it from him instantly.  I sent him that email every so often just to make sure that I was the first one he contacted when he needed money.  I knew like all domainers he would at some point need some cash to buy a bigger name.  It worked and a y...
