Very Few Bids So Far In the Moniker Ext. Auction
By ShaneCultra - October 31, 2009 - 5 Comments
Thankfully my domain SSSA .com is one of them. It is unbelievable that only 10 domains have a bid in the Moniker Extended Auction. One one hand its disappointing to see such lack of interest. On the other hand, my domain is getting a lot of extra attention because it is one of only two with 2 bids and listed right there at the top when you sort by bids. In the sea of names in this auction, I was pretty sure mine were going to get lost. On SSSA I decided to set the reserve a little lower in hopes that it would draw bids and therefore draw attention. The risk was that someone would come in at th... Read More »

Reflections on My First Rick Latona/Traffic Auction
By ShaneCultra - October 28, 2009 - 2 Comments
I no longer a Rick Latona/Traffic auction virgin anymore. No, I wasn't able to go to the auction in person (I am going next year) but I sat through the entire thing and here is my look at it from the viewpoint of a medium sized domainer (portfolio 50-100K)
1. There were some really good flips at the auction. Many of the domains traded hands for much less money in the last year or so. Impressive given the economy. Rick really does incredible job getting value out of a domain.
2. Very very small crowd. The camera didn't show it but a friend was there said the actual bidding crowd in atte... Read More »

Defendants Were Engaged in a Willful and Elaborate Cybersquatting and PPC Advertising Scheme
By ShaneCultra - October 27, 2009 - 2 Comments
This was a quote that irked me from the AAA.net lawsuit press release put out by the American Automobile Association I just ran across. It's an all too familiar story lately in the domain world. Three letter domain is parked and a company sharing the acronym tries to take the name. The American Automobile Association was recently handed over AAA.net but they had to work a little harder than normal. Here are the details of the ruling:
AAA sought transfer of the AAA.NET domain name after it learned that Defendants James M. Van Johns and QTK Internet, Inc. (a/k/a Damian Macafee) were using the dom... Read More »

The Bad Habits We Have While Sitting In Front of the Computer For Hours
By ShaneCultra - October 26, 2009 - 0 Comments
We all do it. Sit in front of the computer for hours on end. Staring, typing, reading. To be a good domainer, it takes a lot of screen time to do research or communicate. To offset the lack of physical movement I run 7-10 miles a day and swim 3-5 times a week so I really don't worry about the weight thing but I do have two bad habits. I drink a frickin tanker truck of Diet Coke and snack on pumpkin seeds continuously. My dentist can't believe I have any enamel left on my teeth and I still have a nice bright smile (or so my wife says). My wife can tell when I'm excited because I shovel se... Read More »

Watching My Domain Stats Reminds Me of Lemonade Stand
By ShaneCultra - October 24, 2009 - 2 Comments
My daughter asked why I don't play video games much any more and I thought to myself, "Have I just gotten old?". "Am I tired of getting beat by a 5 year old?". "Am I just too busy?". I realized the answer is none of the above. Yes, I do think I can find better things to do with my time than play video games, but everyone needs a little fun and games every once and a while. The real truth is my domain stats have turned into a real life version of "Lemonade Stand". You remember the game, I first played it on the Apple II in 1979 or so. It was a simple game, here is weather forecast, here are... Read More »

An Interesting Look Into What Was Registered Yesterday
By ShaneCultra - October 23, 2009 - 1 Comment
I get a kick out of of looking at domains that are registered each day. I use domain-daily.com (not my site) to peruse domains that are registered each day (may be a few days off) to see if there may be a new product, movie, or something unusual that was recently registered. Of course there are hundreds of thousands of domains registered each day so it is impossible to look at them all but here are a few that I thought were interesting or just made me laugh.

There’s Been a Noticeable Lack of CVCV.com Changing Hands
By ShaneCultra - October 22, 2009 - 0 Comments
One of my favorite type of domain names are CVCV.coms and CVCCV.coms. The last three years I was acquiring as many of these as I could afford but then the rest of the world fell in love with LLLL.coms and prices skyrocketed. I didn't sell any of my acquisitions thinking that these were the gems of the non generic domain world. I regret not selling for cash flow reasons but I'm still confident these are long term big winners. The recent price decreases have brought down the prices to the range I am back to buying but something else has changed. Availability. There has been a noticeable decreas... Read More »

Want to Monetize? Don’t create a Minisite, Create a Network
By ShaneCultra - October 21, 2009 - 5 Comments
Minisite this, minisite that. It doesn't take a seasoned veteran to realize that content is king and always has been. Put a little content, make a little money. That's the hopes and the dreams of everyone who own thousands of domain, hoping to make a little on each one by parking or creating a glorified parking page, ie minsite. Most of us don't own that killer generic domain and can only dream as we read the posts of the big boys that scold us for being so petty and bottom feeders, and are forced to create something to bring traffic. The first move is to create content.
Home, it's what we do o... Read More »
