Very Few Bids So Far In the Moniker Ext. Auction

By - October 31, 2009 - 5 Comments
Thankfully my domain SSSA .com is one of them.  It is unbelievable that only 10 domains have a bid in the Moniker Extended Auction.  One one hand its disappointing to see such lack of interest. On the other hand, my domain is getting a lot of extra attention because it is one of only two with 2 bids and listed right there at the top when you sort by bids.  In the sea of names in this auction, I was pretty sure mine were going to get lost.  On SSSA I decided to set the reserve a little lower in hopes that it would draw bids and therefore draw attention.  The risk was that someone would come in at th... Ben Huh and the ICanHazCheezburger Approach

By - October 30, 2009 - 0 Comments
Everyone knows of and What many people don't know is that Ben Huh the face of these sites and the Pet Holdings Inc, is not the founder .  He bought them.  He loved the sites and got funding to buy them.  After the purchase, he has since used the traffic to build 20+ more sites with more that 12 million uniques a month. To me the story is not just the incredible business that was built but the fact that Ben saw something, realized it's value and acquired it.  You don't necessarily have to be the person that bought the domain or started the site to achieve ... I no longer a Rick Latona/Traffic auction virgin anymore.  No,  I wasn't able to go to the auction in person (I am going next year) but I sat through the entire thing and here is my look at it from the viewpoint of a medium sized domainer (portfolio 50-100K) 1.  There were some really good flips at the auction.  Many of the domains traded hands for much less money in the last year or so.  Impressive given the economy. Rick really does incredible job getting value out of a domain. 2. Very very small crowd.  The camera didn't show it but a friend was there said the actual bidding crowd in atte... Read More »

Defendants Were Engaged in a Willful and Elaborate Cybersquatting and PPC Advertising Scheme

By - October 27, 2009 - 2 Comments
This was a quote that irked me from the lawsuit press release put out by the American Automobile Association I just ran across.  It's an all too familiar story lately in the domain world.  Three letter domain is parked and a company sharing the acronym tries to take the name.  The American Automobile Association was recently handed over but they had to work a little harder than normal. Here are the details of the ruling: AAA sought transfer of the AAA.NET domain name after it learned that Defendants James M. Van Johns and QTK Internet, Inc. (a/k/a Damian Macafee) were using the dom... Read More »
