Here’s A Look At My “Other” Job

By - March 30, 2011 - 17 Comments
I find it comical that people will criticize the fact that I don't make a living through domain investing.  Despite the fact I still put in a good 20-40 hours a week at this thing,  people are still naive to think I don't know how to make money or have real stories of success and failure to share.  I have a huge advantage over most domain investors in the fact that I have the ability to run a business while at the same time using domains and the Internet to vertically integrate my company.  Many domain investors that go full time are sacrificing the best years of their careers.  A move that could p... Gone In Three Seconds: All Your Effort Is Wasted If You Have a Bad Host

By - March 27, 2011 - 11 Comments
You spend weeks, months trying to set up the perfect website.  The landing page is the stickiest you've ever seen and the beauty of the design brings tears of joy to everyone in the company.  And yet your host can screw it all up if your site drags just a few seconds. Acro so kindly posted a comment that my site sucked because it was slow and he was right.  Something was certainly going on with Media Temple, my host.  I have been with them for years and they have always done a fantastic job.  Like any host, their first response to every inquiry about site speed is something to the effect of "you... It’s Official: Governer Quinn Signs Illinois Internet Tax Bill and Amazon Cancels My Affiliate Program

By - March 10, 2011 - 15 Comments
It's done.  Pat Quinn of Illinois,  just signed a bill forcing companies like Amazon and Overstock to collect 6.25% tax on their sales from affiliates, or anyone who has a presence in the state of Illinois. House Bill 3659, the Mainstreet Fairness Bill (of course this doesn't help Mainstreet, only Springfield) was passed in January and would have become law tomorrow with or without Quinn's signature. As a brick and mortar business, I understand why people are fighting for the bill.  They are uninformed business owners who are behind the technological times and think this will level the playing fie... Alex Rampell States It Best: If You Want to Compete Online You Better Do the Following

By - February 14, 2011 - 3 Comments
Alex Rampell wrote a story yesterday on TechCrunch that said exactly what I've always thought in the article "Say Goodbye to the Long Tail Of Product Sellers: At Least on the Internet" If you want to be a reseller you're in for a tough ride.  The only way you have a chance to compete against the Amazons is if your product doesn't become "hot".  Once your niche becomes valuable enough for them to get into ,they will out price you right out of business.  In order to compete you have to do the following. 1. Cultivate a better shopping experience. You know what a better shopping experience is.  It's ... Read More »

QR Codes Are Late To The US But About to Make a Big Impact

By - February 10, 2011 - 19 Comments
If you've been to Asia, especially Japan,  over the last couple years you've already seen these crazy looking squares on packaging, media, and on websites.  They are everywhere in Japan but a little late coming to the US. If you went to DomainFest you saw them throughout your program.  QR Codes are a two dimensional code that can be read by camera phone or barcode reader and can contain text or a url.  Originally designed by Toyota to manage parts, they've become a popular way to transmit data without taking up a lot of space. It only takes a few seconds to create your own unique QR code on such ... Read More »
