By - December 15, 2011 - 2 Comments
Nominet was nice enough to share some of the data they've compiled over the last year.  The study was on .uk domains but I am going to assume that the data is very similar for most major tlds.  Here are a few things I found interesting 1.  What domains are being used for. For those sites that did resolve to a valid web page: Business sites account for 43% (33% of total). In 2008 this was 38% (29% of total) Parked pages account for 29% (22% of total). Domain Name Sales has done it again.  The Domain Name Sales Marketplace went live today and for those of you looking for information, you're going to love it. Transparency at it's finest. GoDaddy Aftermarket to Offer Sedo Domains

By - December 6, 2011 - 2 Comments
GoDaddy's domain aftermarket will soon offer all domains already listed through Sedo, according to a source familiar with the agreement. GoDaddy already offers domains listed through Afternic DLS and recently completed integration to offer domains owned and operated by Tucows. GoDaddy, already the largest domain aftermarket by way of amount of domains sold, sets itself up to be the aftermarket powerhouse by integrating the two largest aftermarkets by way of sales numbers. It is unclear how Sedo domains will be integrated into GoDaddy's system, but will most likely appear in the registration path a... Read More »

Aron Meystedt Puts Tablets.com Up for Sale

By - November 21, 2011 - 17 Comments
Meystedt and XF Investments is apparently looking to flip one of their recent investments, tablets.com.  According to press release and a report over at Techcrunch, they have not set a price and will wait for the right bid to come across. He did set the minimum by saying that he has turned down offers of a million dollars.XF acquired the name in November of 2010 an an undisclosed price.  Tablets also changed hands in 2006 for $50,500. I've watched the layout and monetization efforts at the website over the year and realized this would provide even more value to a company that actually sells tablets... Read More »

Banks.com Is Proving That Relying On Google Is a Recipe for Disaster

By - November 15, 2011 - 7 Comments
Banks.com is struggling.  The didn't sell Look.com because they wanted to.  They sold it because they had to. They needed the $400K to make it though tax season and it was one of the few "non core" assets they owned.  Banks.com just reported their third quarter earning and it wasn't pretty. In the third quarter of last year (2010),  Banks.com reported income of $1.4 million dollars.  This quarter, $613,000.  They blamed it on one thing. Google.  Here's how they explained the huge drop in income "Our third quarter results were once again marred by revenue charge backs leveled upon us by Google. ... Read More »

Juan Calle, CEO of Dot Co Provides More Info On Overstock and Says It is Just a “Blip on the Radar”

By - November 14, 2011 - 10 Comments
There is no doubt about the professionalism and ability of the group behind dot co.  If I were building a team I would certainly add Lori Ann Wardii and Juan Calle.  Undoubtedly there was going to be a response from dot co about Overstock and they responded by actually calling Overstock and getting them to answer a few questions.  Here they are below. Why did Overstock.com first begin using O.co? When Overstock.com started twelve years ago we only sold surplus inventory. However, as our business model has evolved, Overstock.com is no longer just an online liquidator.  Because “overstock” i... Read More »

A Little Less O dot co: Overstock Changing Back to Overstock.com

By - November 13, 2011 - 24 Comments
In a not so surprising move, retailer Overstock has decided that changing its name to O.co was not a good business move and that they "moved too fast".  According to Advertising Age, "The online retailer's president, Jonathon Johnson, said it is stepping back from the O.co name "for now," though not abandoning it outright. Overstock will still use the O.co name internationally and on mobile efforts, including an iPad app that launches today. And the sign on the "O.co Coliseum," the home of the Oakland Raiders and the Oakland Athletics, will stay up. Confused? So were customers. Mr. Johnson sai... Read More »

Your Twitter Handle Could Be Worth Big Bucks Or More

By - November 9, 2011 - 6 Comments
Yes there are many stories like this out there but here is another one. A Canadian student named Kirk Morrison, with the right Twitter handle ('KirkMorrison'), recently traded his handle for the trip of a lifetime. Another man named Kirk Morrison, who just so happens to be a linebacker for the NFL's Buffalo Bills, wanted the handle 'KirkMorrison' after changing his jersey number from #55 to #58. With his current Twitter handle being 'KirkMorrison55', he needed a change and decided to go after his name instead of having to change his handle every time he moves to a new team, has to change jersey #'s, etc...
