10 Random Thoughts On Cloudy Saturday Afternoon

By - March 22, 2014 - 6 Comments
Today is opening day at the nursery so it's 6 and 7 days a week from here on in. But a break in the action let me ponder a little about my other business venture and here are a few things that came across my mind 1. You know you're consistent at something when if you don't do it people think something's wrong. I didn't write a daily list today because the quality of the names on Godaddy were so bad I didn't think it was worth wasting anyone's time. I received about 6 emails today and a text from my Mom asking if something was wrong or if I forgot to hit publish today. 2. Juan Calle deserves a stan... Read More »

There Were A Lot Of Bad Calls Last Year But This May Have Been The Worst

By - March 15, 2014 - 8 Comments
Ryan Colby's quote received some attention over at DomainInvesting back in September of last year.  At the time in was pretty unanimous that he was alone in his sentiments and 6 months later the tweet has become infamous.  He explained his tweet with a little more detail in the comments. Great thread going here! Since I primarily represent the demand side (buyers) vs. the supply side (sellers), my comment reflects this particular viewpoint. When you are close to the demand side like I am, you begin to observe certain buying patterns. Traditional investment wisdom holds that you must buy low and... Read More »

I’ll Ask If I Want Your Opinion: Give me Data, History and Your Stories

By - March 3, 2014 - 6 Comments
If I want an opinion, I can go up to any person in the world and get one.  And they'll always be right.  It's human nature to want second opinions. We all want reassurance that our initial thought is supported by someone else. There's a reason that a plant at my nursery with a SOLD tag becomes the most sought after plant in the nursery.  Heck, I'll even play on this and put a SOLD tag on a plant that isn't sold, just to drive demand. They want it because it's hard making a decision sometimes and many feel that if someone else did their homework and picked that then it must be the best.  But the Inte... Read More »

You’re On The Wrong Side of the Profitability Business Model

By - February 26, 2014 - 21 Comments
My Mom never told me to count my eggs or what basket to place them, she told me to I better learn to raise chickens if I wanted to always ensure that I had eggs.   The new gTLD owners and the registrars own the chickens. And they've let you either pay more to get in line first, or they've kept the best eggs for themselves.  Not even telling you they've kept the eggs and let you go on a hunt for a prize that doesn't even exist. I realize it is going to take time to perfect the rollout of the newest domains but I truly feel that this is not going to be profitable for most buyers and will take many ma... Read More »

Why I Think Stone Temple Pilots Is a Great Choice For Entertainment at DomainFest

By - February 19, 2014 - 1 Comment
When DomainFest announced that Stone Temple Pilots was headlining the main party my first thought was, "typical conference reunion band" and  "Is Scott Weiland still alive?".  I had heard that  Scott had been kicked out and continued to have personal problems but didn't realize Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park, was now also singing with STP.  The Band is actually called Stone Temple Pilot with Chester Bennington but nobody knows who the hell Chester Bennington is until you say he's the lead singer of Linkin Park. The two million Facebook likes tells you they're a lot more than an ... Read More »
