Do You Want to Be Successful?

By - August 30, 2011 - 7 Comments
I am not easily moved by motivational speakers or videos but I enjoyed this one.  In a world where everyone wants what others have but refuse to put forth the effort taken, this video does an excellent job explaining it in a way that seems to get the point across. How Bad Do You Want It from Greyskale Multimedia on Vimeo.... Read More »

And This Guy Wonders Why Warner Bros. Filed a URDP Against Him

By - August 19, 2011 - 18 Comments
This is a post I saw today on Acorn forums Hello everyone, Yesterday I received a spectacularly blunt email from lawyers representing Warner Bros notifying me of a UDRP complaint that they've filed against me for my domain thehangover3.com. A domain I registered in December last year (before the film had been announced) and have always intended to use. I know that they're a multi billion dollar company and don't have time for small fries like me but a courteous email would have been much more polite than a blank email with nothing but attached legal documents, but anyway. I've read tha... Read More »

Kevin Rose Loves 5L dot coms and Here’s How He Finds Them

By - August 17, 2011 - 4 Comments
I've said it several times.  I've made most of my money in 5 letter dot coms.  They are perfect names for web companies and new apps.  Kevin Rose agrees.  I found this video on Accidental Domainer and it has Kevin Rose talking about how and where he finds his domains. Head to the 27:20 mark to cut to the domain stuff. Random Episode 15 from Glenn McElhose on Vimeo. If you don't feel like watching here's the takeaway 1. He read and agrees that Fred Wilson's number of $50K for a good domain probably is correct 2. Thinks that good names cost $100K plus 3. He knows friends that have spen... Read More »

This Sheet of McDonald’s Real Food Cost Is a Good Reminder of Overhead

By - August 4, 2011 - 7 Comments
This is a "leaked" photo taken from a McDonald's showing the cost of all the items that make up the menu.  I assume it was made up to remind the employees the cost of all the food they waste.  I would imagine to the average person the first thought that goes through their mind is "Wow,  they make a killing on their food"  What it really shows is how much of a business' price is overhead. It's the most overlooked part of cost.  You are buying or making a product for $1 and you're selling it for $5 and thinking you're doing pretty well.  It's easy to forget the wages, the matching taxes, the ... Guest Post: How Many Successful Domainers Have Created Successful Businesses?

By - July 24, 2011 - 26 Comments
A regular commenter Troy, left the following on my blog this morning and I felt it was worthy of it's own post. It was in response to my article "Domains are a Tailwind" How many “big” domainers can we count that have created successful businesses on major premium domains? I am not talking about businesses that cater to other domainers like Latona used to do, I am talking about a nationwide business that has seen great success? Two I can think of are Bobbleheads.com and AmericanFlags.com. Can anyone else think of other examples? Many domainers are really prideful in many ways. They h... Read More »

DomainTools Opens Opens Up Their API

By - July 13, 2011 - 0 Comments
We've all use DomainTools for one reason or another.  Whois Lookup or History.  NameServer reports and changes.  Whether I'm looking for more information on a domain I'm buying or keeping an eye on what domains companies are buying, there's really only one place I can find out that information.  Now you can build that information into your site. Think about it.  Being able to offer a whois history on a domain on your site.  Prior to the API release there was nowhere else to get it. Now you can offer the same information.  Pretty much all the information that is at DomainTools can be had. Ac... Read More »

Hand Register of the Day: Lemon Drop Melons

By - July 13, 2011 - 8 Comments
I came home from a business trip yesterday and reached into the bowl in the fridge that year round is the endless bottom bowl of fruit.   I was happy to see some melon in it and took out a small bowl.  As I took my first bite I realized this wasn't a normal melon.  The taste started like melon but ended with the taste of a lemon drop.  Yeah, the candy lemon drop.  It was one of the craziest tastes I've ever had from a fruit.  I immediately called my wife to find out what in the heck was in the bowl. She told me it was called a LemonDrop Melon.  Considering the taste, that is about as good of ... Read More »

Google Officially Opens Up Prizes.Org, Another Crowdsourcing of Services Site

By - July 4, 2011 - 2 Comments
Want to have someone plan you 5 year old's birthday party?  How about finding you the best deal on a pair of running shoes?  Google is going to try and get that done for you through their new site Prizes.org. It's not really anything that hasn't been done before but their is one big difference.  It's Google, so there is going to be massive adoption.  After a few minutes it's pretty obvious that it's going to do two things.  One, it's going to allow people to get a lot of things done for them for cheap. Two, it's going to yet again, drive down the price of services.  Logo makers, designers, and ... Read More »

“Boond boond se ghada bharta hain”: 8 Sites I Learn From Every Day

By - June 29, 2011 - 1 Comment
I saw this quote in a post on DnForum by MediaWiz.  It means " The Cup of Knowledge is Filled One Drop at a Time".  It's an old Hindi saying that I really like because it captures my approach to learning and life.  Work on things a little each day and eventually you'll be amazed at what you have over time.  Similar to my saying of "inch by inch, life's a cinch", in today's impatient world, many young people don't realize that things take time.  Everyone wants to know what you know, have what you have, but they don't want to put in the time it takes to get there.   When it comes to learning how to... Why is Drake Oil Field Services Registering TwitterFrauds.com and GrouponFraud.com?

By - June 15, 2011 - 7 Comments
While scanning new registrations I came across a few new registrations that caught my eye.  TwitterFrauds.com and GrouponFraud.com.  Both registered by Drake Oil Field out of Dallas Texas. I went through all the "fraud" domains registered on the same day and the following were all registered TwitterFrauds.com GoogleFraud.com FBFraud.com LinkedinFrauds.com Fraudsbook.com FBFrauds.com PaypalFrauds.com ZyngaFrauds.com Craigslistfrauds.com Of these names, only the two in the title are registered to Drake Oil and Gas.  Most of them have privacy protection on them.  But that ...
