CHINESE SALES TRENDS FOR FEBRUARY 21, 2016

Feb 21 2016

The weekly volume recap is posted as an image below the table.  I just finished reading Josh’s horror story customer service experience with domain.com.  That is exactly the type of thing that I was talking about the other day.  Who would ever want to park or buy a name there after reading that?  I do want to mention that Afternic did reach out to me after reading about the issues I had the other day, and they answered all of my questions.  Thanks Brian – that was great customer service.

They suck you in with Dollar deals, It’s like the Mcdonald’s drive through. I assume they lose money on really cheap domain registrations anticipating renewals or extra services. I don’t know how that business model works if I can get in cheap and all I want to do is leave. I also assume that they have to pay extra for the army of support people they need to employee.

What i do not understand is if AEIOU and V are so bad then why do some of the biggest chinese sites use them in their domain like BAIDU.com ?

I spoke to three Chinese people actually from china, the from older genre 50+ and they all said they do not understand why they leave these out…and as for number 4 and 0 they just said thats for really superstitious people….

Thanks for the comment Stu. With regards to vowels, I think the difference is that Chinese names do not start with these letters. They contain them of course, but often times, short names are bought for acronym purposes. V is a little different, because it doesn’t exist in the language at all. Zero and four may apply to superstitious people, but clearly they affect domain prices. Four in China is similar to thirteen in the US. In the US, several buildings skip the 13th floor (or put all of the A/C equipment there). In China, several buildings skip any floor with a four I think. There are superstitious people everywhere.
