Domain Flips (3DMe.com, GamingApps.com, CollegeAd.com) and Flops (StoryMine.com)

May 25 2014

Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with recent data courtesy of DN Journal and historical data from NameBio.

Flips

  • BabyMarket.com – Sold recently for $4,000 at Sedo, vs $3,300 in 2007 at Sedo. Extreeeeemly thin…..if commissions were 15%, you’re only making a couple bucks after many years of renewals.
  • GamingApps.com – Sold recently for $11,500 through CityAdvertising, vs $1,256 in 2012 at GoDaddy. Bought by Xpedient Digital Media, “Xpedient Digital Media is a Fast growing Internet Media Company which offers Digital Media solutions to Businesses & Online Media Agencies. Operates 50+ rapidly growing network of websites in education, career, health, home, travel, fashion and technology verticals.”
  • 3DMe.com – Sold recently for $6,000 at GoDaddy, vs $1,000 in 2011 at Sedo. Acquired by the folks behind the developed 3DSystems.com. “3D Systems is a leading provider of 3D printing centric design-to-manufacturing solutions including 3D printers, print materials and cloud sourced on-demand custom parts for professionals and consumers alike in materials including plastics, metals, ceramics and edibles.”
  • CollegeAd.com – Sold recently for $2,588 at GoDaddy, vs $1,350 in 2012 at NameJet. An upgrade from the .org, with its screenshot below. I think of ad, as in advertising, but they use is as in athletic departments. “College AD provides the latest news and resources for college athletic departments.”

Flops

  • StoryMine.com – Sold recently for $5,000 at GoDaddy, vs $4,750 in 2011 at Sedo. Assuming 15% commissions, that’s over a 10% loss.

Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
