Domain Flips (HLHL.com, JIWR.com, BBR.net) and Flops (OOTT.com, 30Seconds.com)

May 22 2016

Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with data courtesy of NameBio.

Flips

BBR.net sold for 20,525 USD recently at Sedo, vs 1,310 USD on 2009-05-23 at NameJet. In a time when the wholesale price of LLL.net domains is dropping, kudos to the seller for a great sales price. The end user which picked it up was BBR Verkehrstechnik GmbH, a German company which is “developing and producing innovative electronic systems and components for the rail industry and for rail operators”. The domain is an upgrade from BBR-VT.de, and you can see a screenshot below.

Paydoo.com sold for 9,800 USD recently at Sedo, vs 145 USD on 2006-08-07 at Afternic. Awesome return around 55x after commissions. Presumably this was an end user sale, but no site resolves yet.

HLHL.com sold for 5,000 USD recently at NameJet, vs 441 USD on 2007-10-19 at SnapNames. As I’ve mentioned many times, the recent LLLL.com sales where the hold period was a year or more are typically profitable, whereas the shorter term flip attempts are often in the red (examples below in the Flops).

ZZKE.com sold for 1,855 USD recently at GoDaddy, vs 161 USD on 2015-05-15 at GoDaddy.

MCGK.com sold for 1,423 USD recently at NameJet, vs 105 USD on 2010-05-08 at GoDaddy.

JIWR.com sold for 366 USD recently at Flippa, vs 238 USD on 2016-05-01 at eBay. This one is interesting……Tim Schoon sold this on Ebay this month, and the domain was picked up and sold for a profit at Flippa. Assuming 15% commissions, the profit was about $70 or 30% before taking into consideration the value of your time.

Flops

OOTT.com sold for 4,100 USD recently at NameJet, vs 8,000 USD on 2015-12-11 at NameJet. Ouch, over a 50% loss in 6 months, after commission. See my comment above about HLHL.com. Ditto on the following two sales.

WXFP.com sold for 1,415 USD recently at NameJet, vs 2,400 USD on 2015-12-18 at NameJet.

TRIH.com sold for 511 USD recently at NameJet, vs 860 USD on 2015-07-17 at NameJet.

HealthShield.com sold for 2,225 USD recently at GoDaddy, vs 10,000 USD on 2014-03-02 at Afternic.

30Seconds.com sold for 3,050 USD recently at GoDaddy, vs 19,400 USD on 2013-06-12 at GoDaddy. It appears the business plan never took off. According to Archive.org, they described themselves as follows in a screenshot from earlier this year: “Life is an elevator pitch, but the biggest problem in communicating yourself in any domain is conquering the hard art of standing apart. 30 Seconds is a platform that will allow you to create and share 30 Second videos with the purpose of self promotion within the professional world.”

Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
