Domain Flips (,, and Flops (,

Sep 20 2016

I’m a couple days later than normal with this post, as I was off shuffling through a 100+ mile run this past weekend, which turned my body and mind to mush. Great event in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, with the elevation profile below. We started at 8 am on Friday, and mid-pack runners like myself finished late in the afternoon on Saturday. The temperatures in the 70’s during the day and down to the teens at night kept everyone on their toes, in case the running wasn’t enough.

Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with data courtesy of NameBio.

Flips sold for 1,945 USD recently at BuyDomains, vs 107 USD on 2016-08-19 at GoDaddy. Yet another example of a nearly 20x return from BuyDomains, this time in only a month hold. I didn’t realize such a product existed, but it makes sense now that I think about it. sold for 3,085 USD recently at NameJet, vs 1,200 USD on 2016-04-07 at NameJet. Really big gain for a commodity-like name that sold twice on the same platform within a 6 month span. sold for 3,000 USD recently at NameJet, vs 300 USD on 2015-09-07 at NameJet. Another excellent buy/sell on the same platform, this time with a year hold. ‘Mass’, I’m thinking physically bulking up, vs mass site development. sold for 1,600 USD recently at NameJet, vs 200 USD on 2014-09-18 at GoDaddy. The first of a couple profitable LLLL sales, both of which have a hold period over a year. sold for 1,600 USD recently at NameJet, vs 460 USD on 2012-03-02 at Sedo. sold for 1,000 USD recently at NameJet, vs 190 USD on 2016-06-14 at GoDaddy. It might not be quite like striking gold, but I’ll take 4.5x in three months.

Flops sold for 4,800 USD recently at NameJet, vs 8,500 USD on 2015-11-24 at NameJet. Ouch, a loss of over 50% after commission in less than a year. sold for 4,100 USD recently at NameJet, vs 4,100 USD on 2016-05-16 at NameJet. Looks like break-even until you factor in the commissions….then it’s a $600+ loss. sold for 3,100 USD recently at NameJet, vs 7,800 USD on 2014-01-19 at NameJet. sold for 342 USD recently at GoDaddy, vs 2,500 USD on 2014-05-22 at Sedo. sold for 449 USD recently at GoDaddy, vs 2,000 USD on 2013-04-22 at Afternic. This business attempt didn’t make it….they touted themselves as “A simple shopping tool for the savvy online shopper” and coordinated with popular fashion bloggers on some of their fashion recommendations.

Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
